Rockingham Planning Commission

Broadband Mapping Grant

2/1/2010 - Broadband Mapping Project Underway

New Broadband Study Helping New Economy Efforts

Rockingham Planning Commission (RPC) received funding through the New Hampshire Broadband Mapping Program (NHBMP).  The University of New Hampshire's Geographically Referenced Analysis and Information Transfer (GRANIT) system will manage the $1.7 million received from the U.S. Department of Commerce for the NHBMP, which includes significant involvement from the state’s regional planning commissions.  The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, provided the funding.

The NHBMP is a coordinated, multi-agency initiative to inventory and map current and planned broadband coverage available to the state's businesses, educators, and citizens.  It has two major components: a two-year statewide broadband availability inventory and mapping effort, and a four-year planning initiative that will focus on developing an extensive broadband network throughout the state.

The inventory and mapping process is already underway in the Rockingham Planning Commisssion with RPC staff surveying the region's community anchor institutions by phone during February to collect data on broadband availability and coverage.  Anchor institutions include schools, libraries, medical/healthcare locations, public safety offices, and state, county, and municipal offices.  As the information is collected, it will become part of a larger statewide baseline for New Hampshire, and will aid in prioritizing future infrastructure projects in order to build an effective and sustainable broadband network statewide.
