For
the past five years the RPC has worked with the Greater Derry-Salem Regional
Transportation Council (RTC), the Southern NH Planning Commission, the Nashua
Regional Planning Commission, and more than 30 health and human service
agencies and municipal representatives to develop and implement a plan to
coordinate and expand access to public transportation in the 11-town Greater
Derry-Salem region.
This remains the only urbanized area in the state that lacks regular bus
service. While the region has approximately 20 health and human service
agencies that provide rides to clients, these services are not coordinated,
and meet only a fraction of the need in the region for seniors and other
transit dependent residents. This creates a substantial barrier to accessing
proper health care and basic life needs for many elderly, disabled, and
low-income residents who are unable to drive or lack access to a private
automobile.
The Regional Transit Plan, completed in 2003, proposes establishment of a
regional transit brokerage, as well as eventual fixed route bus service
between Derry and Salem.
